How we do it

Sustainability

Advance the sustainability of OBM industry and its products

Our aim is to advance the sustainability of the ore-based metallics industry and its products. The focus of our work is on enhancing the contribution of the industry and its products to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We will promote good practice in the measurement and control of GHG emissions and the transfer of this knowledge to value chain partners. Sustainability will also be pursued through work supporting continued development of the circular economy.

Material stewardship

Provide guidance for safe and optimal use of handling of OBMs

Our focus remains on the development of sound science and guidance for the safe and optimal handling and use of ore-based metallics. This will include furthering our understanding of the chemical and physical behavior of direct reduced and hot briquetted iron when taking into account potential changes in the properties of these products in light of decarbonization. We will also continue to promote transparency throughout the value chain to encourage responsible supply and use.

Communications

Promote OBMs as value-adding raw materials essential to the circular economy

We will continue to extend our stakeholder outreach to ensure that we, our value chain partners, investors and public policy makers understand, appreciate and respond effectively to developments in our sector that reflect ongoing sustainability and material stewardship objectives.

A key industry voice

IIMA has strong relationships with many other organisations and as the OBM industry association, an important voice in front of regulators. We lobby for the safety and best interests of the wider OBM industry.
